Haslemere Town Council is trialling new lighting on the ancient chestnut tree outside the Georgian Hotel.
The canopy used to be lit but the equipment fell into disrepair.
New uplights have been installed by the contractor on an approval basis, free of charge to the taxpayer, and residents are asked to let Councillors know what they think.
The new system can provide different colours and solid or evolving lights – all by remote control.
Efforts have been made to make sure they don’t shine in any neighbours’ windows and they are on a timer which switches them off altogether at 11.00pm. The electricity is generously supplied by The Georgian.
