The Haslemere Crest
The Crest is a fine emblem but, surprisingly, the grant only dates back to 1959.
It bears two hinds’ heads, with hazel leaves and an acorn as a reminder of the National Trust connection with the town.
The motto ‘Vita Musis Gratior’ does not mean ‘They do it for Nothing’ (as one wag suggested), but something more along the lines of:
“Life is More Gratifying Through the Muses’
‘Life is More Satisfying Viewed Through the Arts and Sciences’.
