- Cllr Jim Edwards
Haslemere Town Councillor Jim Edwards, a former serviceman himself, has reported that the people of Haslemere raised an astonishing £28,000 during the 2017 Poppy Appeal.
Jim, who organises the appeal locally for the Royal British Legion who receive the money, says this is a record for the town.
He arranges for volunteers rattle the tins for one or two hour shifts at busy locations and tallies up all the cash – no easy job.
The writer stood a spell of duty outside Haslemere Railway station for the first time this year and can vouch for the generosity of local people.
A good number pushed paper money into the tin (some even £20 notes) as well as many children who approached a bit hesitantly with their £1 or 50p or 20p but went away proud of their poppy.
Good work Jim and thank you Haslemere.
